How come Ernest Rutherford never won a Nobel prize in Physics?

Rutherford was the originator of the notorious comment: "All science is either physics or stamp collecting"
The committee heard that, and promptly gave him the Nobel Prize for chemistry.

One answer would be "as a very good joke".

Well played.
This probably isn't actually the reason.  More likely, it is that in the early years of its discovery the phenomena of radioactivity and the structure of the atom were seen as the domain of chemistry.  Rutherford won in 1908, for his gold foil experiments which revealed the solid centre in the atom.  The resulting "orbiting electrons model" makes a lot more sense when in comes to explaining the periodic table of elements, than it does in making advances in physics.  In physics, a constantly accelerating electron makes no sense: it should radiate energy away and collapse into the nucleus, so it was quickly superseded by a more accurate quantum picture.
For comparison, Marie Curie won her sole Nobel Prize in 1911 also for chemistry, also for research on nuclear phenomena (her physics one was shared with Pierre).
